Before buying custom shower doors, get four things in writing: the complete price, the approved measurements and specifications, the installation scope, and who pays when something goes wrong. Check standard-product fit first, and settle custom-order details before approving production.

Paying to remove and replace a door can wipe out those savings. Water damage may mean repairs beyond the glass. If you are replacing a failed enclosure rather than buying for a new opening, diagnose the old glass, hardware, frame, and water path with our shower door replacement cost guide before approving custom glass.

We don’t offer custom shower doors. This guide helps you compare quotes and avoid expensive ordering mistakes. You deserve better answers than “Don’t worry, we do this all the time.”

How much do custom shower doors cost?

Don’t mistake a starting price for a finished project

Your location, shower size and layout, glass, hardware, and installation affect the price. Compare what these published prices include:

SupplierAdvertised price and scopeExclusions / confirm before ordering
One Day GlassFrom $495; custom door/panel pageFree shipping advertised; confirm eligibility, hardware, and installation arrangements
Sky Glass SolutionsFrom $989.90 installed; Jacksonville inline enclosureCustom shapes priced after measuring; confirm coating, removal, and taxes
AGM$1,400–$3,000; North Jersey, 3/8-inch framelessPremium glass/configurations cost more; confirm removal, repairs, and taxes

These aren’t matching configurations or a national average. “Confirm” means the advertised price doesn’t settle the item’s cost, not that it is definitely excluded.

Make the quote show its work

Ask each supplier to mark these items included, extra, or not applicable:

  • Glass, machining, coating, hardware, and seals.
  • Measurement, drawings, and revisions.
  • Packaging, shipping, unloading, and carrying glass inside.
  • Installation, adjustments, removal, disposal, and surface repairs.
  • Taxes, travel, and additional visits.

Buy Frameless explicitly excludes crating, shipping, and installation from its pricing. Account for those costs before comparing it with an installed quote. Pricing disclosure

Do you need custom or standard shower doors?

Check fit before paying for custom

Made-to-measure glass follows approved specifications. Standard adjustable models fit a stated range. VIGO

Ask whether you’re buying made-to-measure glass or an adjustable model, and whether the order covers a door, fixed panel, or complete enclosure.

Compare your finished opening with the model’s wall tolerances, threshold requirements, and usable entry width. A “48-inch” label doesn’t guarantee fit. Have sloped ceilings, benches, half walls, and unusual angles assessed professionally.

Compare sliding and hinged doors if room clearance limits your options. Buy what fits. “Custom” isn’t a trophy.

Measuring for a custom glass shower door

Measure the finished opening, including crooked walls

An older bathroom can look square without being square. Out of plumb means the wall leans instead of standing vertically.

Illustrative example: an opening measures 58 inches at the bottom and 58¼ at the top. Ordering from the bottom measurement alone leaves that difference unresolved. The supplier must check whether the system can accommodate it or needs another design.

DreamLine requires measuring after tiling, along the glass installation line: top, middle, and bottom widths, plus plumb and level checks. Measurement guidance

Use your door’s tolerances. Our shower-door measuring guide explains what to record. Have unusual or uneven openings measured professionally; if you supply measurements, clarify what the seller checks and which mistakes you pay for.

Don’t deduct clearances yourself

Confirm whether the order form wants opening dimensions or finished glass sizes. Royalty Mirror leaves deductions to its team. Ordering instructions

Check units and the latest drawing: panel sizes, swing, holes, cutouts, glass, and hardware. Agree which side “left” means. Reconfirm any changed opening before production.

Before you sign: Put measurement-error responsibility in writing. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled afterward. “We’ll trim it on site” is not a backup plan. Fabricator guidance

Check safety documentation and thickness

Get the manufacturer, product identification, and compliance documents. U.S. shower-glazing requirements include 16 CFR Part 1201; CPSC explains its use of ANSI Z97.1 testing. CPSC

Verify claimed SGCC certification through its label information; laser engraving isn’t the only method. Safety glass reduces injury risk, but broken glass can still hurt you. SGCC

3/8-inch (nominal 10 mm) and 1/2-inch (nominal 12 mm) are options to discuss. A 76-inch height cutoff alone won’t select the right thickness. Thicker glass adds weight. Ask for the actual panel weight rather than calculating from nominal inch and millimeter labels. The supplier must check panel size, hinge capacity, and support together. Use our shower-door glass thickness guide to decide whether the added weight solves a real design problem. Glass options

For safety film, request the product, intended use, test standard, and warranty. “ASTM-grade” alone isn’t enough.

Check what “frosted” and “easy-clean” mean

Compare low-iron and standard glass samples of similar thickness against your tile before paying to reduce the greenish tint. Guardian Glass

Acid etching changes the glass surface rather than adding paint. If privacy comes from paint or film, ask whether that specific product suits shower exposure and whether peeling is covered. Check privacy under different lighting and distances, plus the treated surface’s orientation. Walker Glass

Clean the coating only with products allowed by its maintenance guide and warranty. EnduroShield Your squeegee probably isn’t retiring.

For a grid design, specify printed or raised black grid shower doors as well as the glass, grid side, attachment method, finish warranty, and lead time.

A $320 coating upgrade—and a $950 fix

This is a customer’s verbal account. We have not reviewed order, warranty, or repair records or independently verified the coating and repair method.

A Seattle homeowner told us they paid $320 extra for a premium, factory-fused coating with ten years of scale protection. They later reported receiving an on-site spray treatment instead.

Less than a year later, ordinary cleaner wouldn’t remove mineral deposits. After repeated descaling and scrubbing, they noticed scratches. The seller reportedly denied coverage under a hard-water buildup exclusion. The homeowner reported another $950 in repair costs.

Application location alone doesn’t prove quality. ShowerGuard is fused during manufacture; EnduroShield conditionally covers professional or factory application on new glass for ten years. Repellency on clean glass doesn’t mean scale never forms. ShowerGuard · EnduroShield warranty

Get the brand, product, application documentation, mineral-deposit exclusions, cleaning requirements, and registration deadline. Ask who pays inspection, labor, and shipping. Don’t assume existing glass can receive the original factory treatment later.

Your future self has better things to do than debate what “premium” meant.

Hardware, waterproofing, and installation mistakes to avoid

Buy hardware rated for your glass

Get model-specific glass, weight, and width limits. Professional hinges also come in solid brass, so stainless steel isn’t the only suitable material. CRL specifications

For stainless components exposed to coastal salt, discuss 316 rather than 304 with the manufacturer. BSSA identifies better corrosion resistance from 316 in salt-laden coastal conditions. Inland location alone doesn’t guarantee 304 suitability. BSSA guidance

Kohler describes its PVD finishes as scratch- and corrosion-resistant; ask for your hardware’s own test results and warranty. Finish example Some PVD systems sit over chrome plating; “PVD versus electroplating” isn’t a clean either/or comparison or a universal lifespan multiplier. Kohler

Check compatibility before reusing hardware. Specify soft-close if wanted; it isn’t universal.

Check what the hinges attach to

Tile can hide an unsuitable mounting wall. DreamLine’s Unidoor Style A requires double studs or 2-by-6 wood blocking at the hinges. Have the installer verify your model’s backing and fasteners before ordering. Don’t assume hollow drywall will carry the door. Installation requirements

Concept only; use the mounting and sealing details specified for your system.

Caulk cannot replace the waterproofing system

Sealant closes joints; it doesn’t replace the shower’s waterproofing system. The underlying waterproofing, slope, drainage, and sealed penetrations must work together. An embedded stone curb isn’t universal; curbless systems exist. Schluter

Use the specified channels, clamps, seals, and compatible sealant. More caulk cannot compensate for an unresolved construction problem.

Test the door swing before ordering

Illustrative scenario: the glass fits, but its handle hits the vanity before the door opens fully. Mark the swing and handle clearance on your plan; check the toilet, vanity, entry width, and showerhead position.

The layout needs a safe exit even if someone falls behind an inward-moving panel. It also needs the outward opening required by the adopted code. Assess height and ventilation as part of the design, especially for steam showers.

Check installer training, insurance, required licenses, and responsibility, whether the crew is in-house or subcontracted.

Wait before water testing: Keep water off the enclosure for the full stated sealant cure time. DreamLine’s HARMONY manual also directs test water away from the door area. Manual

How long do custom shower doors take?

Ask whether the clock starts with payment, final measurements, approved drawings, or material arrival. AGM estimates two to three weeks from quote approval through installation; confirm your own supplier’s schedule. AGM

Get fabrication, dispatch, delivery, installation, and first-use dates. Confirm business versus calendar days, specialty-material availability, and delays after changes or shipping damage.

“Ships Friday” doesn’t mean “shower Saturday.”

Arrange unloading and carry-in. Read inspection deadlines before delivery, document damage promptly, and retain packaging as instructed.

Hidden costs, returns, and warranty: who pays for the fix?

Agree on extras, cancellation, and remakes

Price and approve extra work in writing before it starts. Account for visible site conditions during assessment; agree how concealed problems will be handled.

For covered California home-improvement contracts, CSLB generally limits down payments to $1,000 or 10%, whichever is less. Check your location and contract type rather than assuming “50% down.” CSLB

Get cancellation/change deadlines and responsibility for errors: remaking glass, shipping, removal, and reinstallation. Royalty Mirror’s conditional $200 replacement credit illustrates why measurement protection doesn’t necessarily mean a free remake. Terms

A free replacement can still leave you a bill

A warranty covering glass alone could leave removal, labor, seals, shipping, and leak repairs unpaid. Ask about each item, exclusions, maintenance, replacement parts, and the claims contact.

Send this before paying: “If your measurement, product, or installation is wrong, who pays to remove it, ship the replacement, reinstall it, and address related damage? Please include the answer in my quote.”

Keep that reply with the approved drawing, invoice, and care instructions.

Custom shower door order checklist

Before paying a deposit

  • Confirm whether custom fabrication is necessary.
  • Compare identical specifications and itemized service scopes.
  • Check measurement responsibility, payment terms, and quote validity.
  • Confirm cancellation, remake, labor, seals, and leak-service coverage.

Before approving production

  • Verify finished measurements, units, and the latest drawing.
  • Confirm glazing documentation and hardware compatibility.
  • Confirm wall backing, waterproofing, swing clearance, and safe access.
  • Confirm fabrication, delivery, and installation schedules.

Before accepting installation

  • Report damage or missing parts within the required window.
  • Complete agreed checks after the required curing period.
  • Document outstanding work, costs, and responsibility.
  • Collect care instructions, warranty contacts, and parts information.

Save this with your quotes. If the answer to a critical question is still “probably,” the order isn’t ready for approval.
